Create Custom Content Fields

In this article

Overview

Sometimes, your products need unique content beyond Describely's default fields (product descriptions, titles, bullet points, meta titles, and meta descriptions) —like Product FAQs, Usage instructions, and more. That’s where custom fields come in.

Not sure what fields to create? Check out this Custom Field Library of real use cases!

Create a field from sample

  1. In your ruleset, scroll to the bottom and click Add Rule.

Choose Custom Field from the list of options.

You’ll have two ways to create it from existing sample content:

    • Extract from a page URL: Paste a product page link, and AI will analyze the page to identify content patterns for your custom field.
    • Copy and paste raw copy: Drop in your existing text for analysis.
  2. Name your field clearly (e.g., “Usage Instructions,” “Product Certifications”, etc.).
  3. Review and refine your rules as needed. You can edit, regenerate, or expand any rule at any time.

Create a field from scratch

  1. In your ruleset, scroll to the bottom and click Add Rule.
  2. Choose Custom Field from the list of options.
  3. Select Create from scratch to write your own custom prompt or use AI to generate one.
  4. Name your new custom field.
  5. Choose a field type:
    • Text for plain raw text.
    • HTML if your platform or product information manager requires HTML formatting.
  6. In the Instructions section, you have two options:
    • Manually write instructions: Be as specific as possible about format, length, style, and structure.
    • Use AI to help: On the left side, click the Generate button. Describely will automatically create draft instructions for you, which you can edit as needed.

Tip: Write detailed instructions (e.g., “Write a list of 3 short, 30-character care instructions with keywords at the start.”). The clearer your direction, the more accurate and consistent the output.

Test & save your custom field

  1. At the bottom of the window, select a random product from your catalog to preview the generated content.
  2. Review the output and adjust instructions if needed until it matches your expectations.
  3. When you’re happy with your custom field, click Create Custom Field at the bottom.
  4. In the lower right corner, click Save and Apply to add it your master ruleset.

Voila! Now you’ll see your default fields and any custom fields when you create content in bulk, making it easy to create, review, and approve everything in one go.

Describely’s content rulesets and custom fields give you full control over your brand voice and product data—so every piece of content is consistent, on-brand, and built to convert.
